The Metropolitan Police Department's Environmental Crimes Division announced on August 12, 2026 that it had arrested Daniel Isaac Velasco Baltazar, 23, a Mexican national, on suspicion of violating the Customs Act (attempted unauthorized import). According to reports by Jiji Press and other outlets, he is accused of hiding approximately 200 blue tree monitor lizards, native to Mexico's highlands, inside 22 pairs of socks in his suitcase and attempting to smuggle them through Haneda Airport on the 8th of that month. The scheme came to light when customs inspectors found some of the lizards dead during an inspection.
The suspect has admitted to the allegations, reportedly saying, "I bought them for about 750 yen each." The same species of lizard is believed to resell in Japan for around 100,000 yen each. Trading such lizards requires an export permit under the Washington Convention (CITES), which regulates international trade in endangered wild flora and fauna. The case came to light after an anonymous tip in late July regarding possible lizard smuggling connected to a reptile exhibition prompted Haneda Airport customs officers to inspect the suspect's suitcase.
