A joint investigation team from Ibaraki Prefectural Police's Tsukuba Station and Organized Crime Control Division 2 announced on July 27, 2026 that it had re-arrested a Cambodian technical intern trainee, 24, living in Tsukuba City, on suspicion of violating the Stimulants Control Act (possession for profit). According to a report by Ibaraki Shimbun Cross Eye, he is accused of hiding approximately 11 grams of methamphetamine, worth roughly 583,000 yen at street value, in the filter component of an indoor air conditioning unit on April 8 of that year.
By the same date, a 25-year-old Cambodian specified skilled worker living in Chiba Prefecture had been arrested on suspicion of violating the Stimulants Control Act (receiving), and a 27-year-old man in the same location had been arrested on suspicion of violating the same law (use). The joint investigation team had also re-arrested two Cambodian technical intern trainees, 24 and 23, on April 28 on suspicion of importing for profit after allegedly smuggling approximately 171.97 grams of methamphetamine, worth roughly 9.11 million yen, hidden in international mail, and is investigating possible connections between these cases.
