A 33-year-old man was detained by August 5, 2026 at Porto's Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in northern Portugal on suspicion of baggage theft and attempted assault on police officers. According to local media reports, the investigation began after a passenger reported a missing suitcase and backpack, and the man was apprehended inside the airport terminal. He is believed to have hidden the stolen items in furniture within the airport.
During the arrest, the man reportedly resisted and attempted to assault officers from the National Unit for Foreigners and Borders (UNEF) who tried to restrain him. Items belonging to other victims were also found in his possession and were later returned to their owners. The investigation revealed that the man's application for a residence permit in Portugal had already been rejected, and that he was subject to two Schengen Information System entry-ban flags issued by Italy and the Netherlands.
