This article organizes publicly available information into a single account. Where it describes an arrest or an ongoing investigation, that reflects only one stage of criminal procedure and does not mean guilt has been established (the presumption of innocence applies). We will update this article as new information becomes available, including the outcome of prosecution, non-prosecution, or trial. This article is not intended to unfairly disparage any individual, group, nationality, ethnicity, or belief, and aims to provide objective, fact-based information.

On October 20, 2026, Chiba Prefectural Police announced the arrest of Takuma Nakane, 28, head of a civil engineering-related company in Tomisato, and Du Ronnie Jay Bonita, 38, a Filipino national who is unemployed, on suspicion of robbery causing injury for allegedly assaulting a 22-year-old work colleague and taking cash and other property at a materials yard in the Odake area of Sakura, Chiba Prefecture. According to TBS NEWS DIG and other outlets, the two allegedly forced the man to drink bleach and gasoline and burned his body with a torch between September 2 and 3, 2026, before taking 25,000 yen in cash and a smartphone.

The victim suffered burns, fractures and other injuries requiring about three months to heal. The case came to light after the man escaped from a container and his family contacted police. Nakane is also reported to face a suspicion of unlawful confinement. Police are investigating the detailed circumstances, including whether there had been a dispute between the victim and the two suspects.

Current status: Whether the two admit the allegations, what led to the assault, the relationship between the victim and the Filipino suspect, and whether the case will be referred for prosecution remain unclear as of this writing. This article will be updated as further details emerge.

Editorial Perspective

No decision on indictment has been made at this stage, so this article reflects information from the investigative phase. An arrest is only one step in criminal procedure and does not establish guilt (the presumption of innocence). According to National Police Agency and Ministry of Justice statistics, the number of Penal Code cases involving foreign nationals visiting Japan has risen for two consecutive years since 2023, but remains below its mid-2000s peak (related article). A single case does not necessarily reflect the broader statistical trend; further developments are worth watching.
