Hokkaido Police announced that around 9:50 a.m. on August 11, 2026 it arrested a 54-year-old South Korean national on suspicion of theft after she allegedly stole 10 bags of salted caramel candy, worth a combined 2,149 yen, from a shop inside New Chitose Airport in Chitose, Hokkaido. According to a report by UHB Hokkaido News, the woman is believed to have been visiting Hokkaido for work. Security camera footage showed her putting the items into her bag, and police used the footage to search the airport and locate and arrest her.
Under questioning, the woman admitted to the allegations, saying, "It's true." She reportedly stated her motive, saying, "I've stolen salted caramel before, too.
