A joint investigation team from Ibaraki Prefectural Police's Chikusei Station and the prefectural police's Organized Crime Countermeasures Division announced by August 3, 2026 that it had arrested four men on suspicion of preparing to commit robbery: a Thai national and self-described construction worker living in Kasumigaura (27); an unemployed man from Ishioka (27); a part-time worker from Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture (22); and an unemployed minor from Tsuchiura (15).
They are accused of casing the home of a business owner in his 60s in Yachiyo for around 30 minutes by car on the evening of July 13 that year, at around 8:20 p.m., while carrying knives, a small pistol crossbow, ski masks, and gloves with intent to commit robbery. The four are said to be acquaintances who communicated using a highly secure messaging app. Police seized a 30-centimeter crossbow with a 45-centimeter width along with multiple bolts, ski masks, and gloves from the vehicle.
Current status: Police believe the case is linked to an anonymous, ad hoc criminal network (known in Japan as "tokuryu"). Whether the case will be referred for prosecution remains unclear as of this writing. This article will be updated as further details emerge.
