Chinese Man and Japanese Woman Arrested Over False Marriage Registration in Aichi

On June 24, 2026, the Aichi Prefectural Police arrested Wang Zhigang (36), a Chinese national whose occupation is unknown, and Suzuki Riko (25), a company employee from Mizuho City, Gifu Prefecture, on suspicion of submitting a false marriage registration to a city office in order to obtain residency status. The two allegedly submitted a false marriage registration to the Mizuho city office in Gifu Prefecture in March of the previous year. Wang reportedly stated that he "wanted status to allow him to work in Japan long-term," while Suzuki said she did it "to receive payment," and both are reported to have admitted to the allegations.
Wang is believed to have paid the broker who arranged the marriage around 2 million yen, while Suzuki is believed to have received more than 1 million yen in payment. The man and woman who served as brokers for the two are already under arrest and indictment for brokering a sham marriage for another couple, and are believed to be the same Lu Mingfeng and Sakaguchi Atsuko who were arrested in Gifu Prefecture (related coverage).
Current status: Wang and Suzuki are at the arrest stage, and whether prosecutors will indict them had not been determined as of this writing. The brokers who arranged the marriage, however, have already been indicted.
It is becoming clear that the same brokers arranged sham marriages across multiple prefectures, and police are investigating whether there were other similar cases.
