Miyagi Prefectural Police announced by August 5, 2026 that it had re-arrested a 28-year-old Brazilian national on suspicion of theft. According to a report by local broadcaster TBC Tohoku Broadcasting, he is accused of stealing a Lexus LX, valued at approximately 20 million yen, from a residential property in Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture in September 2025. The vehicle's engine was off and its doors were locked at the time, but the suspect is believed to have used some method to start the engine and drive it away.
The man had previously been arrested in December of the prior year on suspicion of stealing three luxury SUVs in Toyama Prefecture. Police are investigating him as a suspected member of a group responsible for a string of luxury SUV thefts across the country. Within Miyagi Prefecture alone, six other similar thefts were confirmed in 2025.
