Okinawa Prefectural Police announced on September 1, 2026 that they had arrested Poseidon Alexander Roberson, 32, a U.S. national of no fixed address who described himself as a company employee, on suspicion of arson of an inhabited structure and attempted murder. According to Jiji Press and the Ryukyu Shimpo, he is accused of setting fire to a budget lodging facility made of shipping containers in Chatan Town around 3:30 a.m. on August 15, 2026, knowing guests were inside, damaging the building with intent to kill them.
At the time, 19 guests, including the suspect, were staying at the facility. The fire damaged guest rooms as well as a rental car parked at the site. A man in his 50s from Osaka Prefecture who was staying there was transported unconscious to a hospital in central Okinawa's main island, but his condition has since been improving. The suspect is believed to have been a traveler.
