Vietnamese National, 38, Arrested Over Stealing Bicycle From Vacant House in Hokkaido After Stakeout at Station Bike Park
This article organizes publicly available information into a single account. Where it describes an arrest or an ongoing investigation, that reflects only one stage of criminal procedure and does not mean guilt has been established (the presumption of innocence applies). We will update this article as new information becomes available, including the outcome of prosecution, non-prosecution, or trial. This article is not intended to unfairly disparage any individual, group, nationality, ethnicity, or belief, and aims to provide objective, fact-based information.
Hokkaido Prefectural Police's Atsubetsu Station arrested a 38-year-old Vietnamese national on October 25, 2026, on suspicion of trespassing on a residence and theft. According to STV News Hokkaido, he is accused of entering a vacant house in 2-chome Koyo-cho, Kitahiroshima City, Hokkaido, on an unspecified date between May 7 and October 19, 2026, and stealing a bicycle worth about 35,000 yen.
On October 19, a 62-year-old man from Kitahiroshima City who manages the property reported to police that the vacant house he looks after had been broken into and a bicycle stolen from inside. On October 23, officers found the bicycle parked at Kitahiroshima Station and set up a stakeout; the suspect appeared at 6:30 p.m. on October 24 and was taken into custody. Under questioning he has reportedly admitted the allegations, saying there was no mistake.
Several break-ins at vacant houses have occurred in Kitahiroshima City and the surrounding area, and police are investigating whether the cases are linked.
Current status: Whether the man committed other offenses, his residency status, and whether the case will be referred for prosecution remain unclear as of this writing. This article will be updated as further details emerge.
Editorial Perspective
No decision on indictment has been made at this stage, so this article reflects information from the investigative phase. An arrest is only one step in criminal procedure and does not establish guilt (the presumption of innocence). According to National Police Agency and Ministry of Justice statistics, the number of Penal Code cases involving foreign nationals visiting Japan has risen for two consecutive years since 2023, but remains below its mid-2000s peak (related article). A single case does not necessarily reflect the broader statistical trend; further developments are worth watching.
