This article organizes publicly available information into a single account. Where it describes an arrest or an ongoing investigation, that reflects only one stage of criminal procedure and does not mean guilt has been established (the presumption of innocence applies). We will update this article as new information becomes available, including the outcome of prosecution, non-prosecution, or trial. This article is not intended to unfairly disparage any individual, group, nationality, ethnicity, or belief, and aims to provide objective, fact-based information.

Around 2 p.m. on July 5, 2026, a 34-year-old Sudanese national carried out a knife attack in the Carmes district of Clermont-Ferrand, central France. According to reports by French outlets including Le Journal du Dimanche, the man first attacked a neighbor with a kitchen knife inside a building, then attacked several passersby in the surrounding area; at least three people were injured and taken to CHU Gabriel Montpied Hospital, though none were in life-threatening condition.

When a patrolling officer spotted the man around 3:30 p.m., he lunged at the officer and attempted to slash at his neck with the knife. Another officer then fired three shots; the man was struck in the flank but was not in life-threatening condition, and the officers were unharmed. The man was reportedly already known to police for violent behavior, had a history of psychiatric treatment, and had prior convictions for violence against police. The investigation determined that he was in the country in an irregular immigration status.

Current status: Authorities have ruled out a terrorist motive, but further details of the motive and whether the case will be referred for prosecution remain unclear as of this writing. This article will be updated as further details emerge.

Other cases involving Sudanese nationals reported in France around the same period include a series of sexual assaults on a Toulouse bus route (related coverage).
