Fukuoka Prefectural Police and Fukuoka Customs announced on August 20, 2026 that they had arrested four people, including a Thai woman, 28, on suspicion of violating the Stimulant Drug Control Act. According to KBC Kyushu Asahi Broadcasting and RKB Mainichi Broadcasting, the Thai woman is accused of smuggling roughly 2,460 grams of a powder believed to be methamphetamine from Thailand to Fukuoka Airport on July 12, 2026, hidden in a cardboard box containing tea and coffee sticks. The powder was discovered during a customs inspection at Fukuoka Airport.
Police also arrested a Vietnamese man, 29, residing at the address the package was addressed to, along with two of his Vietnamese acquaintances, as accomplices. The seized methamphetamine is estimated to be worth roughly 130 million yen at street value, equivalent to about 82,100 doses.
