Aomori Prefectural Police's Misawa Station announced in July 2026 that it had arrested a Taiwanese national teenager, 19, self-described as an electrician, on the spot on suspicion of fraud. According to reports by Web Toonippo and other outlets, the teenager is accused of conspiring with unidentified individuals to make multiple calls to a woman in her 60s in Aomori Prefecture between late June and July 9 of that year, falsely telling her she was implicated in a crime and needed to deposit her assets with a Financial Services Agency official to prove her innocence, in an attempt to defraud her of 5.5 million yen.
The woman, anxious about handling such a large sum, had already consulted Misawa Police Station in advance. Police responded with a "pretend to be fooled" sting operation and arrested the teenager on the spot when he arrived to collect the cash. Under questioning, he has reportedly said, "I cannot speak until I have consulted a lawyer." Police believe the scheme was organized and are investigating additional offenses and accomplices.
