Japan Launches 'Specified Residence Card' Integrating Residence Card and My Number ID

The Immigration Services Agency began operation of the "Specified Residence Card," which integrates the functions of a residence card with those of a My Number card, on June 14, 2026. Starting the following day, June 15, regional immigration bureaus across the country began accepting applications for the card. It is available to mid- to long-term residents and special permanent residents, who may apply for and obtain it on a voluntary basis.
A related change also took effect: residence cards issued on or after June 14, 2026 will now be valid until the holder's tenth birthday after the date of issuance (the fifth birthday for those under 18).
